Thoughts on the show

It was good, I am gonna have to say i am a little disappointed they didn't show more coverage of may 22, the hail, the birth of the super-cell and the sound of the inflow.
I have all the footage, thank GOD.
It is only what is a reality show, they wanted drama, which they got with Bill and Cullen. Them two could do their own show, I watch it! What a team them two make!!!
I would still do it all over again, just to be back in tornado ally.

All in all I think they did a good show, I realy enjoyed being out there. Brad and Maryanne and Bill and Cullen never made me feel like I was just a guest but a chaser and Peggy and Melanie The brightest Woman I have ever met let me be there student and the crew well they made me feel like a star.

Unknown said...: The use of stock video being edited in to increase the drama is getting a little old. Somehow they went from the real Hill City torn on 5-22-07 to some video I shot 6-04-05 in KS (the airborne debris)to what was possibly one of the 6-24-03 torns in SD shot by Timmer. The other thing was the gustnado bit in SD. They showed the outflow winds kicking up dirt then show a F2 I also shot back in KS a few years ago with full grown mature trees falling out of the sky and day that is a gustnado. One hell of a powerful spin up to be a gustnado LOL! On to E3. Make sure you check out Tornado Hunters at the same time on Court TV the same night and time. That should be a heck of a show featuring Randy Hicks and Lanny Dean.; December 22, 2007 at 11:35 PM

HAIL (3/4 inch or greater)

Hail can cause significant damage to your vehicle, break windows and damage roofs of homes and businesses.
Hail can cause significant bodily injuries such as broken bones and even blindness if wind blown.
Softball (4.5 inches) sized hail was reported in Lake Wales, Florida on March 30, 1996.
Haildrifts, up to four feet deep of dime to nickel sized hail, occurred in low-lying areas near Zephyrhills, Florida on January 29, 1997.
Hailstones the size of softballs can fall at speeds faster than 100 mph

supercell

Supercells derive their rotation through tilting of horizontal vorticity (an invisible horizontal vortex) caused by wind shear. Strong updrafts lift the air turning about a horizontal axis and cause this air to turn about a vertical axis. This forms the deep rotating updraft, the mesocyclone.
A cap or capping inversion is usually required to form a downdraft of sufficient strength. The cap puts an inverted (warm-above-cold) layer above a normal (cold-above-warm) boundary layer, and by preventing warm surface air from sinking too far, allows one or both of the following:
Air below the cap warms and/or becomes more moist
Air above the cap cools
This creates a warmer, moister layer below a cooler layer, which is increasingly unstable (because warm air is less dense and tends to rise). When the cap weakens or moves, explosive development follows.
In North America, supercells usually show up on Doppler radar as starting at a point or hook shape on the southwestern side, fanning out to the northeast. The heaviest precipitation is usually on the southwest side, ending abruptly short of the rain-free updraft base or main updraft (not visible to radar). The rear flank downdraft, or RFD, carries precipitation counterclockwise around the north and northwest side of the updraft base, producing a "hook echo" that indicates the presence of a mesocyclone.
